Emerge Maine Announces their Woman of the Year

AUGUSTA, MAINE—Emerge Maine, the state’s premier organization for recruiting and training Democratic women to run for office, will host its annual Woman of the Year Reception on April 26th at the Governor Hill Mansion in Augusta. Emerge Maine is dedicated to supporting and promoting Maine woman leaders. To reaffirm this commitment, each year the organization honors an extraordinary woman who has made significant political, business or social contributions to the state.

This year Emerge Maine is very pleased to announce that Fatuma Hussein of Lewiston will be honored as their Woman of the Year. She is the founder and Executive Director of the Immigrant Resource Center of Maine and also serves on the Maine Community Foundation’s People of Color Fund; Maine’s Permanent Commission on the Status of Women and many other committees and boards.

"Fatuma has overcome great obstacles in her native Somalia as well as here in the United States. She is widely admired for her work to break down barriers for women and girls here in Maine," says Emerge Maine Executive Director, Sarah Woodard.

Emerge Maine will also be honoring House Majority Leader and Emerge Maine alumna, Erin Herbig, as its Rising Star for her leadership in the Maine House Representatives and her tireless service to her hometown of Belfast.

Other notable participants will include Emerge Maine alumnae Hon. Emily Cain, Speaker Sara Gideon and the AFL-CIO’s, Sarah Bigney. They will take part in the awards ceremony and assist Emerge Maine in honoring these exceptional women.
