PORTLAND--Emerge Maine has hired Jill Barkley of Portland to be the new Executive Director of the organization, which recruits, trains, and inspires Democratic women to run for political office.

"As part of the Emerge Class of 2009, I gained confidence, new skills and an incredible network of support,” said Barkley. "I am excited to continue to strengthen the Emerge network of Democratic women from all across our state in my new role as Executive Director."

During her 2010 campaign for Maine’s 98th District against Republican state representative Paul Waterhouse, Lisa Villa still had a few things to learn about public office. Going up against a veteran politician, she campaigned by herself. Undeterred, she pressed on the best way she knew, going door-to-door.

She visited a home in Sweden, Maine where two men greeted her, shirtless and on ATVs.

Diane Denk of Kennebunk has been an active member of the democratic community since she and her husband, Roger Hansen, moved to Maine 12 years ago. She is active in Equality Maine, as well as in the Maine State Democratic Committee. She is also an active member on a subcommittee for community outreach.

Emerge Maine is seeking a candidate for the Executive Director position who can develop and implement a strategic plan to increase our fundraising, raise our profile in Maine Democratic politics, and continue to oversee our six month training program.

We are seeking a highly motivated, talented, and entrepreneurial individual to serve as the Executive Director (ED).  The ED reports to the Chair of the Board of Directors and works with state board members to achieve organizational goals.  The primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: fundraising and budget management, program implementation, class recruitment, board management, and support for program members and alumnae.

Lewiston--Three Emerge Maine alumnae are setting their sights on winning seats on the Lewiston City Council this fall. Current Lewiston City Councilor Kristen Cloutier, and first-time candidate Kristine Kittridge are graduates of the Emerge Maine class of 2015. Alumna Isobel Moiles, class of 2012, is also running for Lewiston City Council and if elected, will serve her first term.

Previous Emerge Women of the Year are former Clerk of the House, the late Millie MacFarland (2010), the Honorable Libby Mitchell (2011), Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (2012), Attorney General Janet Mills (2013), Senator Dawn Hill (2014), and Representative Peggy Rotundo (2014).
